The late Earl Nightingale from the Nightingale Conant Corporation called it ‘The Strangest Secret’. Strange because he couldn’t understand why the secret of success was a secret!

The law of the Universe tell us that it requires no more effort to aim high in life than to aim low, that there is no difference with taking on a small idea or a big idea and yet only 5% of people achieve true success.

So lets define success first and I think Ralph Waldo Emerson states it beautifully in this quote;

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded”

The secret that Earl Nightingale was alluding to is that man becomes what he thinks about and we’re not just talking here just about positive thinking. So why is it that so few achieve any real success and why is there such a disparity between what people intend to do and what they actually achieve. Earl quotes Rallo May form his book Man’s search for himself that ;

“the opposite of courage is not cowardice, it is conformity”

and so it is that one the main reasons that so many fail to achieve success is that they conform to their situation running around acting like everybody else and not knowing why.

So what is the key? In a nutshell I do believe that the essential elements of success are; Vision – Purpose – Passion – Goals.

Vision – You must have a very clear idea of what you want. You must be able to feel it and believe it is yours.

Purpose – We were all born with unique talents and gifts and it is up to each one of us to find out what we are good at and why you are here. From these specific talents you will be able to determine your definite purpose.

Passion – Once you have your vision and purpose clearly defined, fall in love with your idea. Remember the first time you fell in love? you couldn’t put that person out of your mind and you felt butterflies in your stomach whenever you thought about seeing that person again. Put that same feeling and passion into your idea. When you do this you will find that you will stop pushing and you will find that it will guide you.

Goals – You’ve got to know where you’re going and an idea of how you are going to get there. I say an idea because sometimes people get so caught up in plotting their journey that they never begin, just have the foundational elements in place and BEGIN.

Let’s not forget the power of our minds in this equation either. Learn to master you mind, most of the problems people have are mental in nature, conduct a bit of mental housecleaning to sharpen your senses and clarify your mind. Being aware and trying to change the way you think may require a lot of effort, but it is highly constructive. It will result in an increase of your power and bring about a life that is fulfilling, meaningful and successful for you.
