For most of us staying young and living longer and better may seem like a pipe dream, but according to the International Symposium on prevention of aging, average life expectancy has increased by 15 years in the last decades. Next year it is predicted there will be 23.7% of people over the age of sixty, which is almost a quarter of the whole population. It is no wonder then that Anti-Aging has become such big business, with the whole thinking centering around reducing the deterioration process in our bodies and therefore increasing longevity.

Live Longer And Feel Better

Scientists the world over will all agree that although our genes directly influence the speed at which we age, our lifestyle can also affect it. For this reason the  focus on anti aging is for it to be more holistic – through a combination of cosmetics, nutrition and professional treatments. Therefore we should reduce stress, improve our nutrition, maintain strong muscles and look after your skin inside and out.

The secret here is that the oxidation process of our skin cells will slow down the sooner you start to look after yourself, keeping you looking and feeling younger for longer so that for every birthday we become a year older, we look a year younger.

Cosmetic companies now are starting are starting to use the most advanced techniques to reach the deeper layers of the skin, the latest trends are;

Super Antioxidants- Antioxidants inhibit free radical damage. The most active are Soy which activates cellular multiplication, and Poly-phenols which are found in Green Tea and Grape Seed and Resveratrol found in grapes, nuts and red wine.

Stem Cells- Their presence in the skin accounts for less than 0.01% of the cells in the epidermis, but they are essential in the regeneration process. As we age their number does not vary but their activity does. Molecules such as Pro Cell-T or the Basal Reconstruction system are believed to help stimulate regeneration although according to the cosmetic trade magazine Happi “while more companies are jumping on the stem cell bandwagon, many dermatologists and industry observers remain unconvinced about the efficacy of the material.”

Sunscreen - The higher the better. UV  protection is necessary to stop photo-aging. All of the best skincare creams incorporate an SPF within.

Genetic Anti-Aging - Scientists the world over are now very aware that the source of all human aging is from our genes. Many cosmetic and supplements companies are looking at attacking the sources of aging at a genetic level with effects that you can actually see and with more sustainable results. The aim of these products is to return skin cells to behave as they did when they were young.

Exactly what these companies are working on is categorising the genes which relate to aging and then formulating a product which will bring these genes back to equilibrium. What people will notice within days is that the skin becomes more radiant with an evening of facial pigmentation as well as refining the pores.

These findings are not just restricted to the skin , but also to the body. Like our skin our heart, kidneys, brain all age and these findings are helping pave the way to rejuvenating the body from the inside out. Exciting times ahead!

Anti-Aging Dream Team- As well as soy, polyphenols and resveratrol there is another series of anti-aging activants which are very effective.

Pro-Xylene : Combats the loss of skin density
Vitamin C : Gives firmness, vitality and structure to the skin
Sirtuins : Known as the longevity enzymes. These are anti-aging repair enzymes that protect the cells of the skin.
Hyaluronic Acid : helps water retention to optimise hydration
Retinol : Stimulates the production of new skin cells
